Online pensions dashboard gets go ahead from government

The eagerly-anticipated pensions dashboard has been given the green light by the Government, but only if the pensions industry develops it.

Intended to provide a facility for retirement savers to see their pension plans in one place, the pensions dashboard – brainchild of former chancellor George Osborne – has now received the go ahead from the government.

In a written statement from Pensions Minister Guy Opperman, it was revealed that the government will facilitate this “industry-led dashboard”- but only if the pensions industry develops it.

This news has led some industry groups to express their disappointment and concern that this could exclude state pension information.

Mike Cherry, Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, said the self-employed community “will be feeling thoroughly let down” by the announcement.

Cherry added:

“If we end up with an industry dashboard that doesn't include information about the State Pension then you'll still have a proportion of the self-employed believing that their government top-up will get them over the line.

“That's a really dangerous place to be.”
